Jouberton Nursery Project 2009

The Brief: Stage 1

Below is an excerpt from the original brief issued to all second year students in September 2008.

brief

This year’s 2nd year project will evolve around a collaboration with the South Africa based charity Education Africa to develop concepts for a small pre school/nursery, and construct a scheme that constitutes the most interesting ideas. Our scheme to house 80 children will be located in Klerksdorp, a township 250km south west of Johannesburg. The project is a rare opportunity for 2nd year students to generate strong ideas that will collectively be developed by the units in the semester one and implemented and built on site by the students in Semester two.

The chosen concept will become a participatory project on a social level and be considered carefully for its economic and technical feasibility from an early stage. As year two is a particularly early for most students to be familiar with the process of realising a real project, a complimentary set of lectures and workshops will be given, exploring kindergarten prototypes and requirements and the climatic conditions and construction methods that are present locally. Rather than proposing a space that is confined to the needs of the children and its feasibility, projects should be looking to explore the existing social infrastructure in Klerksdorp and expand on its programmatic and social potential.
